2003-2004
Amanda Gerlach helped to refurbish and calibrate a SPEX 270M monochromator on loan from University of Arkansas at Little Rock. She then made measurements of the near infrared emission spectrum of a mini-hybrid rocket and the lab-scale hybrid rocket at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock. Amanda presented her research in the form of a poster at the National American Chemical Society Meeting, Anaheim, California, March 28-April 1, 2004, Near Infrared Emission Spectrum of a Lab-Scale Hybrid Rocket Motor. She also presented this poster at the 12th Annual Space Grant Symposium at Lyon College on April 30, 2004 and at the Central Arkansas Section of the American Chemical Society Awards Banquet on April 20, 2004. In addition, Amanda made oral presentations of her research at the Arkansas Undergraduate Research Conference, Henderson State University, Arkadelphia, Arkansas on April 16, 2004 and the 12th Annual Space Grant Symposium, Sensor Development of Chemical Rocket Motors: Near Infrared Emission Spectrum of a Lab-Scale Hybrid Rocket Motor. She submitted a paper, Emission Spectra of a Lab Scale Hybrid Rocket Motor, to the 2004 Proceedings Journal of the Arkansas Undergraduate Research Conference. On April 19, 2004, Amanda gave her Senior Seminar at Harding University, April 19, 2004, Near Infrared Emission Spectrum of a Lab-Scale Hybrid Rocket Motor. Amanda received undergraduate research fellowships from the Arkansas/NASA Workforce Development Program, the Arkansas Space Grant Consortium and the SURF-SILO Scholarship Program. Currently, Amanda is pursuing a doctorate in the graduate program at Texas A&M in the area of analytical chemistry.

Amanda Wooldridge carried out measurements to characterize the capabilities of diode lasers for use in measuring water vapor and oxygen. Her work was reported at the 12th Annual Space Grant Symposium at Lyon College on April 30, 2004, Use of Near-Infrared Diode Lasers in Spectroscopic Measurements. Amanda was a recipient of an undergraduate research fellowship from the Arkansas Space Grant Consortium. Amanda is entering a physician’s assistant program.

Philip Ashley applied advanced signal detection techniques to improve measurements of the oxygen content of a mini-hybrid rocket. Philip presented his research in the form of a poster at the National American Chemical Society Meeting, Anaheim, California, March 28-April 1, 2004, Measurement of Diatomic Oxygen in the Exhaust Plume of a Mini-Hybrid Rocket. He also presented this poster at the 12th Annual Space Grant Symposium at Lyon College on April 30, 2004 and at the Central Arkansas Section of the American Chemical Society Awards Banquet on April 20, 2004. Philip received undergraduate research fellowships from the Arkansas/NASA Workforce Development Program, the Arkansas Space Grant Consortium and the NASA/Gerald Soffen Memorial Travel Fund. Philip is a NASA Workforce Undergraduate Research Fellow at Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California in the Mobile Robotics Laboratory.

Bill Ganus measured the ultra-violet emission spectra of several combustion systems including a mini-hybrid rocket and the lab-scale hybrid rocket at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock. Bill presented his research at the Arkansas Undergraduate Research Conference, Henderson State University, Arkadelphia, Arkansas on April 16, 2004, Ultraviolet Studies of the Emission Spectrum of a Lab Scale Hybrid Rocket Motor. He also used the information gained to present his Senior Seminar on April 26, 2004, Ultraviolet Emission Studies of Hybrid Rocket Plumes. Bill Ganus is spending two years in China teaching English in one of the universities.

Alex Hamilton carried out chemical kinetics measurements of reactions important to Earth’s atmosphere. Alex presented his research in the form of a poster at the National American Chemical Society Meeting, Anaheim, California, March 28-April 1, 2004, Reaction Rate and Temperature Dependency of n-Heptane with Hydroxyl Radicals Over the Range 227 K to 406 K by a Relative Method. He also presented this poster at the 12th Annual Space Grant Symposium at Lyon College on April 30, 2004 and at the Central Arkansas Section of the American Chemical Society Awards Banquet on April 20, 2004. Bryan Gross helped build a temperature controller to modulate the temperature of diode lasers used in our NASA related research involving hybrid rocket exhaust plumes and sensors for space missions. Bryan made an oral presentation at the 11th Annual Undergraduate Research Conference, Henderson State University, Arkadelphia, Arkansas, April 17, 2004, Development of a Temperature Controller for Diode Lasers. On April 5, 2004, Bryan gave his Senior Seminar at Harding University, Temperature Modulation of Diode Lasers.

Sarah Mitchell measured the calories in nutritional energy bars in preparation for her research at the Nutritional Biochemistry Laboratory at Johnson Space Center during the summer of 2004. She presented the results she obtained from her calorimetry studies at the 12th Annual Space Grant Symposium at Lyon College on April 30, 2004 and at the Arkansas Undergraduate Research Conference, Henderson State University, Arkadelphia, Arkansas on April 16, 2004, Nutritional Assessment of Energy Bars. Amanda Gerlach began a research project to measure the emission spectrum of a mini-hybrid rocket exhaust plume. Ryan Williams constructed a temperature modulation head for a diode laser that would produce temperature excursions on the order of 10˚C. He also designed a simple spectrometer and built a computer interface using National Instruments LabVIEW. Natalie C. Fonville, synthesized new copper complexes and determined the structure of one of the compounds crystallized. She did this over the internet, controlling the x-ray crystal diffractometer at Southeast Missouri State University from a computer in the Pryor Science Center at Harding University. Amanda Wooldridge and Phillip Ashley worked on measuring the oxygen content of a mini hybrid rocket exhaust plume using a diode laser spectrometer that she is building. Phillip Ashley -- in addition to the above research began research on use of a 1414 nm diode laser to measure water concentrations in the plume of a hybrid rocket. He also worked on developing the tracking system for a tracked vehicle to house our Mars water vapor sensor.

Aliegha Allison DeLukie, Beth Prost and Nicholas Evans tried to measure plant volatiles grown in the Harding University Bioregeneration Chamber. They also worked to improve the hydroponics delivery system of the Bioregeneration Chamber. The three presented a poster at the 11th Annual Arkansas Space Grant Symposium, University of Central Arkansas, Conway, AR, April 25, 2003, Volatile Emissions from Plants Grown in a Bioregeneration Chamber.

2001-2002 Mark B. J. Bailey, Spectroscopy of Rubidium 85 and 87 Using Diode Laser Spectrometry -- Mark made measurements of the spectrum of rubidium isotopes in the gas phase and presented his results at the 22th Annual University of Memphis Undergraduate Research Conference, the 86th Annual Meeting of the Arkansas Academy of Science and the 2002 Arkansas Undergraduate Research Conference. In April, Mark submitted a paper The Method and Analysis of the Absorption Spectroscopy of Rubidium Isotopes Using Infrared Radiation from a Diode Laser to be considered for publication in the 2002 Proceedings Journal of the Arkansas Undergraduate Research Conference. He also presented his research as his senior seminar at Harding University. Mark won 1st Place for his presentation at the 22th Annual University of Memphis Undergraduate Research Conference

Matthew Neely, TLDAS-Tunable Laser Diode Absorption Spectroscopy -- Matt did research investigating the spectrum of the rubidium 85 and 87 isotopes by setting up a diode laser spectrometer system and presented the results of his research at the 86th Annual Meeting of the Arkansas Academy of Science at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and the 2002 Undergraduate Research Conference, Henderson State University, Arkadelphia, Arkansas. He also presented his research as his senior seminar at Harding University. In April, Matt submitted a paper, TLDAS-Tunable Laser Diode Absorption Spectroscopy, to be considered for publication in the 2002 Proceedings Journal of the Arkansas Undergraduate Research Conference.

Douglas Cutsinger, Is Money Really Filthy Lucre? -- Doug analyzed United States paper currency for cocaine content by means of gas chromatography using a quadrupole mass spectrometer detector. He also visited the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory where he learned more about cocaine analysis and helped analyze some of his samples using their instruments. Doug presented his results at the 22th Annual University of Memphis Undergraduate Research Conference, the the 86th Annual Meeting of the Arkansas Academy of Science and the 2002 Arkansas Undergraduate Research Conference. He also presented his research as his senior seminar at Harding University. In April, Doug submitted a paper, Cocaine Contamination of United States $1 and $20 Currency in Searcy, Arkansas, to be considered for publication in the 2002 Proceedings Journal of the Arkansas Undergraduate Research Conference.

Justin Dyniewski, Chemistry of Luminol – Justin studied the pH properties of the various forms of luminol and presented his results at 22th Annual University of Memphis Undergraduate Research Conference, the Arkansas Academy of Science and as his senior seminar at Harding University. In April, Justin submitted a paper, Investigating the pKa’s for Luminol, has been accepted for publication in the 2002 Proceedings Journal of the Arkansas Undergraduate Research Conference.

Thomas L. Nix, Differential Scanning Calorimetry – Tommy helped set up our new differential scanning calorimeter and then did protein folding studies with it and presented his results at the 22th Annual University of Memphis Undergraduate Research Conference, the 86th Annual Meeting of the Arkansas Academy of Science and as his senior seminar at Harding University. Liz Null, Computational Chemistry Studies of the Transition State of Hydroxyl Radical Reactions with Aliphatic Hydrocarbons – Liz did quantum mechanical calculations on transition states for some of the reactions we’ve been studying in the laboratory and presented the results of her work at 22th Annual University of Memphis Undergraduate Research Conference, the 86th Annual Meeting of the Arkansas Academy of Science, the 2002 Arkansas Undergraduate Research Conference and as her senior seminar at Harding University. Derek Selvidge, A Study of Luminol through Molecular Modeling – Derek got involved in gaining an understanding of the solution and spectral properties of luminol. This research is part of an on-going research program to use luminol in a screening test for colo-rectal cancer. He used pH, UV/Visible spectrometry, fluorescence and carried out quantum mechanical calculations in his studies and.performed computational chemistry studies of aqueous phase forms of luminol at various pH values. He presented the results of his work at 22th Annual University of Memphis Undergraduate Research Conference and as his senior seminar at Harding University. In April he submitted a paper, A Study of Luminol through Molecular Modeling, to be considered for publication in the 2002 Proceedings Journal of the Arkansas Undergraduate Research Conference.

Sheila Kukta, Measurements Atmospheric Chemical Rate Constants of Hydrofluorocarbons of Industrial Interest – Sheila made kinetics rate measurements of two hydrofluorocarbons that may serve as replacements for Freon compounds. Nicholas Evans, Misting System for Plant Growth Chamber – Nick tried several different methods to provide hydroponic solutions to the plants in our plant growth chamber. Aleigha Allison and Beth Prost, Determination of Plant Volatiles by GC/MS Chromatograpy – Ali and Beth worked together to investigate the identification of plant volatiles from the plant growth chamber. They are still in process on this project. Both co-presented presented a poster at the 2002 Arkansas Undergraduate Research Conference and the 10th Annual Arkansas Space Grant Consortium Symposium.

Reagan Baber,
Development of a Method for Water Determination Using Thermometric Titrations – Reagan worked with a commercial titration calorimeter to determine the amount of moisture in aviation fuel, gasoline and several laboratory chemicals. He presented his research at the 85th Meeting of the Arkansas Academy of Science where he was awarded 2nd Place in the Chemistry Division. He also used this material for his senior seminar at Harding University. We subsequently submitted a paper on this research that was published -- Edmond W. Matthew Smeltzer, Design of a Temperature Control for a Diode Laser –Matthew made AutoCad drawings of a temperature cell for a diode laser and then machined the cell. He also worked on the electrical circuits needed. Julia Henderson and Shannon Fonville, Biochemical Studies of the Occurrence and Function of Chromium in Cells. Julia and Shannon developed a protocol for isolating cellular organelles using a density gradient. This was in order to assay these organelles for chromium content. They presented the results of their work at 2001 Arkansas Undergraduate Research Conference and each as their senior seminar at Harding University.

Bill Evans, III and Nathan Scott, Chemical Kinetics Studies of the Reactions of Hydroxyl Radicals with Hydrocarbons – Bill and Nathan made chemical kinetics measurements of the reaction between hydrocarbons and hydroxyl radicals. They co-authored an extended abstract presented at the National American Chemical Society Meeting. Jamie Pate, Acidity of the Ground and Excited States of 2-Naphthol – Jamie measured the pKa’s of ground and excited state 2-naphthol using UV/VIS and flurorescence spectrometry. She present the results of her studies at the 2001 Arkansas Undergraduate Research Conference and as her senior seminar at Harding University.

Chris Hill, Visualing Atomic Orbitals Using MathCad – Chris used the three dimensional graphing capabilities to produce images of the different atomic orbital found about an atom’s nucleus. He presented the results of his studies at the 2001 Arkansas Undergraduate Research Conference and as his senior seminar at Harding University.

Jeremy Post, Measurement of Water in the Exhaust Plumes of Hybrid Rockets by Diode Laser Spectrometry – Jeremy worked on building a test stand to hold our rocket motors and our diode laser spectrometer for measuring the chemical species present in hybrid rocket motors exhaust plumes. He presented his research results at the 9th Annual Arkansas Space Grant Symposium and the 2001 Arkansas Undergraduate Research Conference.

Angela Cheng,
Construction of a Programmable Plant Growth Chamber Using LabVIEW – Angela made additional progress in the construction and interfacing the plant growth chamber that will be used in growing crops under elevated carbon dioxide atmospheres. Angela presented the results of her research efforts at the 8th Annual Arkansas Space Grant Consortium and the 2000 Annual Undergraduate Research Conference. Her work was published in the 2000 Proceedings Journal of the Arkansas Undergraduate Research Conference, pp. 18-27.

Mark McMasters, Development of a Mars Lander for Atmospheric Studies, Mark built a one-third scale model of the Mars Lander that took Sojourner to the Martian surface and equipped it with lasers to be used in our research in developing a water vapor sensor for Mars studies. Mark presented the results of his research efforts at the 8th Annual Arkansas Space Grant Consortium, the 2000 Annual Undergraduate Research Conference and as his senior seminar at Harding University. His work was published in the 2000 Proceedings Journal of the Arkansas Undergraduate Research Conference, pp. 127-130

Bryce Murray, Chromium Analysis of Mitochondria – Bryce isolated mitochondria from cells and carried out furnace atomic absorption techniques to show that chromium is found preferentially in the mitochondria. Mark presented the results of his work at the 2000 Annual Undergraduate Research Conference and as his senior seminar at Harding University. His work was published in the 2000 Proceedings Journal of the Arkansas Undergraduate Research Conference, pp. 137-141. .
