May 8 Harding University's board of trustees voted to lower the cost of tuition for the school's MBA program by more than three percent at the annual spring meeting . The tuition reduction becomes effective with the beginning of the 2015 fall semester. The cost will now be $650 per credit hour. The decision to reduce the tuition was based on the board's desire to keep the program accessible to students and to remain competitive in this highly competitive market area.
“In a time when tuition rates are constantly increasing, Harding University has strategically chosen to reduce the tuition in our MBA program for the upcoming year. Just like our program is different from our competitors, this tuition strategy is different from our competitors for the coming year. This tuition reduction should allow even more students to pursue our MBA program in Management and Business Ethics. As with any business with a differentiation strategy, we strongly view the Harding MBA as adding tremendous value in the lives of our students. We have seen this and heard this from our graduates.

Congratulations to Andrew Brackins, Zachary Clevinger, Cody Veteto, Bradley Wheeler, and Austin Yates. They took 1st place in the 2015 Donald W. Reynolds Governor's Cup Competition held in Little Rock! The team was formed as part of an Entrepreneurial Management course taught by Dr. Allen Frazier. They took home a cash prize of $25,000. Andrew Brackins also won the elevator pitch competition with a cash prize of $2,000. The team also went on to compete with the 2nd place team from Arkansas along with the top two teams from Oklahoma and Nevada in the Tri-State Competition in May in Las Vegas, NV.
After several months of planning, eleven students met in New York City for a nine day trip exploring businesses in both New York and Washington D.C. Led by Dr. Glen Metheny and Dr. Bryan Burks, students met with COBA alumni who shared both their professional and personal experiences of living and working in New York and DC. The trip also included tours of Wall Street, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, Grand Central Station, Bureau of Printing and Engraving, MANA, Good Spread, etc. The trip is also part of a course the students are taking in the spring - BUS 301. Although this was the inaugural trip for COBA, we joined with the Department of Communication who have been conducting this trip for several years. We had several combined cultural visits as well as our own business focus visits. The College of Business plans to make this an annual trip. The Center for Professional Excellence is gearing up for another exciting semester! Our first event was an Etiquette Dinner for all COBA students on January 29 at 6:00. Mr. and Mrs. Sloan covered topics on dining and business etiquette. On February 26, we will host our COBA Spring Career Event for all business majors to come visit with recruiters from a wide variety of firms. Our annual Mock Interview Fair will take place on Tuesday, March 24. Students and alumni can sign up and practice their interviewing skills with professional recruiters and receive helpful feedback. These are the three big events of the semester, but there will be plenty of other opportunities to develop professionally and meet with recruiters. We look forward to a great semester of helping our students succeed!
Fall 2014 was an eventful and exciting semester for the MIS department. We started the semester with the BITS annual retreat at Heber Springs. October was a busy month with the inaugural 'MIS in the workplace' event organized by Yessica Jones and attended by approximately 150 COBA students. Speakers included representatives from Walmart, Arkansas Childrens Hospital, Microsoft, and Acxiom. October also saw Dr. Cronk present her research at the European Conference on games based learning in Berlin, Germany.
In December the MIS Capstone course delivered two successful projects and built the framework for a third project during the Fall 2014 semester. One project worked with the Cannon-Clary College of Education and the Literacy Lab to build a database that provided attendance tracking and invoicing of all of the participants that go through the Literacy Lab at HU. Another project worked to develop a scheduling system for the Elementary Education ministry at College Church of Christ. This web based solution assigns, promotes, and keeps a history of the many different students, teachers, and volunteers that serve in this area.
The third project worked to develop a web based results system. This project will hopefully be continued in the spring to integrate the necessary RFID hardware with the software. Once this project is complete we plan to sell it to local race directors for use in various events. The software will allow a race director to build all of the components of any race distance and any race division. allow for race participant registration, accurately time participants with RFID tracking chips, and assign placements based on the race results in a web ready format. We are currently looking for a sponsor to purchase the hardware for the project.
George Oliver announced that he intends to retire at the end of the Spring 2015 term. George has served in many capacities in both the School of Business, the College of Business, and for the university at large. George came to Harding in the fall of 1985.
George has served in the Management program as chair of the department and later served as Dean of the College of Business here at Harding University. In addition to his service to the university, he is recognized the world over as a leading expert on accreditation having served in the specialized accreditation body Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) where he has held many positions over the years including president of that organization.
We are pleased to announce the establishment of a new COBA Advisory Board for the Paul R. Carter College of Business. With this new structure, we now how two divisions of our advisory board which should help us focus their attention on the internal activities and the external activities. Many universities have boards that lean one way or the other in regards to structure and focus, but this structure should allow us to do both. Both are crucial to our current and future success with our numerous constituents.
The Academic board (internal focus) is structured with three alumni, three employers, and three academics. The Center for Professional Excellence (CPE) board (external focus) is comprised of six employers and two faculty representatives. The two divisions are considered "equals" as both roles are vital to our success in the College of Business.

During May 2013, a group of business students and two faculty sponsors experienced China for two weeks! The journey began in Beijing where they visited several businesses and saw cultural sites such as the Great Wall, Forbidden City, and the Summer Palace. They continued on to Xi’an for more business visits and a tour of the Terra Cotta warriors’ display. The journey then took them to Guangzhou where they visited Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, one of the university’s partners. With a visit through Zhuhai, they eventually landed in Hong Kong for continued business visits and city tours. The 13 day trip which included five cities, two domestic flights, seven business visits, and numerous cultural visits, was an excellent addition to the many opportunities offered to our students in the College of Business.
The College of Business is making plans to host this China Experience Trip during Intersession of each year. If you are a student at Harding, we encourage you to look at this opportunity to expand your global horizons. We limit the group to 15 students per year. London is the economic center for European business and one of the three global giants—along with Tokyo and New York. It is the 6th largest world economy and home to the world's largest international banking center, handling half of all European activity.
The London study program provides exposure to broad international businesses, multi-cultural diversity, and extensive history. With the primary language being English, travel and information exchange are easy.
Students will meet with, and learn from, such business as Murphy Oil, Cargill, ASDA, Tate and Lyle, Thames Refinery, Deloitte, Wimbledon, Leeds, the BBC, Sky Television, Jaguar, and similar companies. It is an opportunity to see how businesses perform in a vast global environment.
You will have an opportunity to experience the international lifestyle and culture on a daily basis. Cultural and historical visits include such landmarks as the 900 year old Tower of London, Westminster Abbey and St. Paul's Cathedral, the Borough Market, Portobello Road, the British Museum, London Eye, Shakespeare's Globe Theater, Imperial War Museum, The Royal Pavilion, castles, the British Open, and even the streets walked by Jack the Ripper. In past years, our arrival time has corresponded with the final rounds at Wimbledon and students have been able to spend a day at the world's most famous tennis tournament.
The Business Study Abroad Program includes a six week program with 8 semester hours of credit. Students are involved in four weeks of study, business visits, and travel in London and the surrounding area as well as two weeks of individual free travel throughout Europe (free travel time can be adjusted by traveler at personal cost).

The Paul R. Carter Business Administration is honored to have John Freeman as our Alumnus of the Year. Having worked in banking since 1974, John Freeman (69') has served many roles.
Currently, he is president of Liberty Bank of Arkansas, a title he's held since 2003, and executive officer of Liberty Bancshares. Prior to his work with Liberty, he was executive vice president of Citizens Bank of Jacksonville, Ark.; executive vice president of First National Bank of Batesville, Ark.; president of Independence Federal Bank of Batesville; and president of Union Planters of Arkansas.
He is vice chairman of the Arkansas State Banking Department board of directors, chairman of the Arkansas Bankers Association Governmental Affairs Committee, and a member of the Arkansas State University's chancellor's cabinet, among other organizations. He and his wife, Lois Cooper, have two grown daughters.
