Academy race remembers alumna Micah Rine
Sept. 25, 2017 — The Academy will hold the seventh annual Micah Rine Wildcat Legacy Race at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7. The race begins at the Academy campus and includes a 5K race and 1-mile run/walk. The event is named for Micah Rine, a former Harding Academy student who was murdered at age 26 in 2009.
“Micah was a runner and loved the Academy,” said Dennis Rine, Micah’s father and teacher and counselor at the Academy. “The race seemed like a natural way to honor her and raise money for the women’s workout room and scholarship named in her honor.”
For Dennis and his wife, Terri, the race has been a way for them to remember Micah while also celebrating her life with their Academy family.
“We have had good turnouts for the race, and it is always a highlight to see Micah’s classmates come back and run in her honor. Terri and I are humbled and honored to see people remember our daughter in this way.”
As a member of the basketball, cross-country and track teams, Micah was awarded Best Female Athlete her senior year. The Micah Rine workout room honors her while also strengthening the next generation of Academy female athletes.
“Micah was a dedicated student and servant leader in all that she did, from academics and athletics to friendships and her life for Christ,” said Dr. Darren Matthews, high school principal. “The race is a way to remember her dedication and service and also honor her. I think through remembering Micah and celebrating her life, we gain strength through her example and dedication in her life for Christ.”
Prizes awarded in the 5K include overall first, second and third; top master (40 and older); and male and female winners in age groups 10-14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70 and older.
