About Paul R. Carter

The legacy of Paul R. Carter included a faithful Christian, devoted husband and father, and a successful businessman. He was often described as a constant encourager, a man of integrity, a hard worker, and a wise counsel who demonstrated unconditional love. He was a leader among leaders

He began his career with Howard Discount Stores where he learned from the Howard family. He was hired by Sam Walton in 1977 as they worked together building Wal-Mart, a company founded upon the principles of integrity, service, and a strong work ethic. Throughout his 26-year career with Wal-Mart, he held the titles of executive vice-president, chief financial officer, president of Wal-Mart Realty Company, and named to the board of directors. Sam Walton said that hiring Carter was one of the better things that happened to Wal-Mart.

Paul Carter loved Harding University and the College of Business Administration, and he often spoke at our annual leadership seminar. He began his service on the Harding board of trustees in 1985, continuing for 25 years until his death in October 2009. He served as an elder at Bentonville Church of Christ for over 25 years. He and his wife, June, modeled Christian marriage for over 50 years. In addition, all three of their children graduated with business degrees from Harding University.
