Why study environmental science at Harding?

Science and Faith

From freshman biology lectures to upper-level science and Scripture courses, students are mentored by professionals to think critically and thoroughly about the big questions of science and faith.

Research experiences

Research experiences in the lab or field are required. These courses include independent projects allowing students to investigate and collect data, perform data analysis and practice scientific writing. These labs offer a low student-to-teacher ratio for optimal learning. With prior approval, students may also receive research laboratory course credit for summer research internships at other universities. Students participating in faculty-mentored independent research may earn a research certificate, creating a portfolio of their work to demonstrate critical thinking, communication skills and contributions to their field of study.

Gilliam Biological Research Station

The Gilliam Biological Research Station is a 700-acre property set aside by the University for multiple levels of biological research. Students and faculty have abundant opportunities to participate in plant, insect and wildlife surveys, long term studies of plant and animal physiology, and forest and wetland ecology studies.

More Information

  • Biology Research
The biology research minor is for students who wish to focus on research-based courses as an addition to their degree program. Having research experience and knowledge about laboratory techniques enhances student applications to graduate schools and professional programs in medicine.

  • Molecular and cellular biology
The molecular and cellular biology minor provides students with a foundation in biology with an emphasis on the molecular and cellular levels. Our knowledge of cell biology and genetics continues to provide important advances in the biomedical field, including in cancer research.

  • Biology
The biology minor requires 4 hours of Principles of Biology courses and 14 additional hours of elective courses chosen from a menu of options including a variety of biological topics.

  • Environmental Science
The environmental science minor helps prepare students for a broad range of rewarding careers in science, government and industry. This 18-19 hour minor requires courses in environmental science, environmental law and policy, and either earth science or geology. The remaining elective hours are chosen from a menu of biology, chemistry and physical science courses.

What can you do with a degree in environmental science?

Environmental science

A career in environmental science focuses on protecting the environment and human health through research and innovation. This could include work in research and data labs as well as data gathering and monitoring environmental conditions in the field.

Environmental Management and Conservation

A degree in environmental science prepares students for careers with private companies and government agencies that focus on protecting and improving the environment.  These agencies may evaluate compliance for government environmental regulations, help educate companies and/or individuals on environmental protection, and advocate for sustainable practices that sustain or improve the environment.

Geologist

Environmental geologists study minerals, soil and groundwater, generate surface maps, and collaborate with other scientists and engineers in areas such as mining, hydrology and other specializations.
