Human Biology

Students are offered a strong foundation in both biology and exercise science to enhance their training and competitiveness for positions in health professional programs, including programs for physical therapy, physician assistant, medicine and dentistry.  Students are required to designate and complete a preprofessional program. This major will not prepare students for research-focused graduate work.

Physician assistants and physician

A degree in human biology will lay a strong and diverse foundation in scientific knowledge and skills for students who are interested in a career in human medicine.  This knowledge will help propel them to a higher level of scientific thinking to optimize their approaches to patient care.  The human perspective courses help educate future physicians and physician assistants with understanding a variety of patient backgrounds and cultures and how to interact with patients in different stages and situations of life.  

Physical therapists

The human biology major optimizes the level of readiness for students entering physical therapy school. With a strong foundation in both biology and exercise science courses, students have an excellent foundation of scientific knowledge and skills to excel in their future career. The human perspective courses help educate future physical therapists on a variety of patient backgrounds and cultures. These courses help with understanding how to interact with patients in different stages and situations of life as they customize their approaches to recovery after injuries or surgeries.

Dentistry

Dentists advise patients concerning their oral health and disease prevention while also considering their overall health.  A degree in human biology will lay a strong and diverse foundation in scientific knowledge and skills for students who are interested in a career in dentistry.  This knowledge will help propel them to a higher level of scientific thinking to optimize their approaches to patient care during clinical procedures such as exams, fillings, crowns, extractions and treatment of various oral conditions. The human perspective courses help educate future dentists with understanding a variety of patient backgrounds and cultures. These courses help dentists with how to interact with patients in different stages and situations of life
