Medical and Laboratory Science

To complete this degree, students take three years of courses at Harding and apply for admission to the School of Medical Laboratory Science at Baptist Health College in Little Rock. After finishing a year of clinical courses in the Baptist MLS program, students are awarded an undergraduate degree from Harding in medical laboratory science.

Prepared for success

Students are prepared for the pace and rigor of the program courses due to their foundational scientific knowledge across multiple courses before going to Baptist Health College in Little Rock, Arkansas, for their senior year. Our students are prepared for high stakes testing and pass board exams on their first attempt.

Laboratory experiences

Laboratory courses prepare students well for working in a laboratory environment through the introduction and practice of basic molecular and cellular biology laboratory techniques. Biology and chemistry courses provide students with a broad scope of knowledge and experiences, which helps them to choose a specialty that aligns more with their interests. Graduates can work in microbiology, chemistry, blood bank or hematology labs.

National certification offers flexibility

Our program prepares students for careers in their home states as the Baptist Health affiliate program requires a national board certification exam. Our alumni are working Washington, Texas, North Carolina and Arkansas.

What can you do with a degree in medical laboratory science?

Medical Technologist

Medical technologists analyze biological samples in a laboratory to help with the diagnosis and treatment for diseases. They use specialized equipment to complete tests in the laboratory to provide to health care professionals to inform patient care.

Blood Bank Technologist

A medical laboratory science degree prepares students for working in a blood bank. These technologists ensure the safe, efficient collection, processing and distribution of blood and blood components.  Blood bank technologists use specialized equipment to test blood samples for quality control.  They collaborate with health care professionals to meet the needs of patients requiring transfusions.

Laboratory Manager

Medical laboratory managers oversee the daily operations of a laboratory, including staffing, budgets, safety and compliance with regulations. They help maintain standards for accuracy in testing, help develop new procedures, adopt new technologies and equipment, and ensure the security of patient data.
