Students engaging in research will become competent with the process of research and scientific inquiry
Research is systematic, inquiry-based investigation of a gap in understanding that contributes to a generalized set of knowledge or action(s). Research experience will involve: the collection of data and/or documentation of evidence; critical reading of primary literature or other research-based reports; interpretation, analysis, and evaluation of findings; and dissemination of results.
Students graduating from academic institutions are expected to be able to critically evaluate their field of study. Formal parameters that encourage critical evaluation and the development of expertise within and across disciplinary boundaries are becoming a more necessary part of education. A primary mechanism for undergraduates to develop an appreciation for the scope and challenge of such boundaries is engagement in faculty-mentored research. Students engaging in research will become competent with the process of research and scientific inquiry, interpersonal skills, critical thinking, integration into the culture of scholarship, and data analysis.
Our Goal
Students will develop and demonstrate competence in discipline-specific research from conception to completion and reporting. Student learning outcomes include:
Demonstrating progress in discipline-specific knowledge and skill acquisition;
Displaying excitement about work completed and results collected;
Understanding the importance and contributions of research to their chosen career path; and
Applying analytical reasoning skills to inquiry-based evidence collection.
Letter of intent submitted no earlier than 6-weeks before the first semester of research and no later than the beginning of the third semester of research activities
Students must have identified a Harding faculty adviser and formalized a plan for the first semester of research experience
Participation in 4 semesters of undergraduate research experience/field experience
one semester can be substituted for a department-certified course that clearly integrates research concepts
one semester can be substituted for an external research internship
a 10-week summer research experience counts as one semester
one semester can be substituted for a publication in a peer-reviewed journal
one semester can be substituted with a paid or unpaid internship as an undergraduate teaching assistantship for a research-based course
two terms must be with the same faculty mentor
Student must complete at least one Statistics or Research Methods course
Two different presentations of research results
Completed application and portfolio of research activities
