They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but how do you take one image and tell the story of the Old Testament, a story which contains 503,493 words in a way that is compelling, contemporary and faithful? That was Professor Tessa Davidson’s challenge as she began work on this project, the first of two large-scale paintings for the College of Bible and Ministry. A companion piece focusing on the New Testament is already underway and will be unveiled next year. Emphasizing the global nature of the Harding community and the people of God, Davidson selected models from among the University faculty, staff and students who also represent every inhabited continent. The figures in the painting represent major elements of the Old Testament, but much of the painting’s power is found in the smaller details. Like the Old Testament itself, the painting demands not merely to be seen but to be contemplated. Notice the roles of water, fire and earth as you read the painting from left to right. Look for the presence of the Holy Spirit, represented in the form of doves. Consider the figures’ postures as they express the story of the Old Testament and highlight humanity’s ongoing quest for hope, meaning and belief. The painting is on display in the dean’s suite, McInteer 103.
At Harding University, you'll have the opportunity to be transformed academically, relationally and spiritually so you're prepared to change the world.
